Missouri State Post Endorses Mike Ferguson
for Missouri Lieutenant Governor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 31, 2004

(Belton) - For the first time in Missouri's history, a major newspaper has endorsed a Libertarian candidate for statewide office.

The Missouri State Post, one of the state's largest African-American owned newspapers, endorsed Mike Ferguson this week. The Missouri State Post is owned and operated by Minority Press Association, a Kansas City-based media company, and has a statewide circulation.

The paper's article about Ferguson noted, "Mike Ferguson is a serious candidate. He is deeply interested in where Missouri is headed and he has some clear ideas about how he can help."

Among the reasons cited for the endorsement are Ferguson's dedication to improving Missouri's economy by reducing taxes and regulatory burdens on small businesses and his experience in working with representatives from both of Missouri's other established parties while working on the Missouri State Plan Committee.

Ferguson welcomed the news of the endorsement; "I am absolutely thrilled. The Missouri State Post has a track record of concern and active support for both our urban communities and the State of Missouri as a whole.

"The Post's Editorial Board showed tremendous courage in considering all candidates and making endorsements based on principles and ideas instead of partisanship.

"The message is clear: it is time for Missourians to show that our votes and, in this case, our political support cannot be taken for granted by anyone. Mike Ferguson is the right candidate and the Lieutenant Governor's race is the right election to send that message."

Ferguson Stands Alone in Defending Taxpayers
Is the only Candidate for Lt. Governor Who Pledges
to Oppose Tax Increases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 30, 2004

(Belton) In the race for Lieutenant Governor, only one candidate has put his pledge to protect taxpayers in writing. A news release from Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) confirms Libertarian nominee Mike Ferguson is the best choice for taxpayers in next Tuesday's election. Ferguson is the only candidate for Lieutenant Governor to sign ATR's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge." The pledge simply states the candidate signing it agrees to oppose any and all efforts to increase taxes. *

Republican Peter Kinder and Democrat Bekki Cook refused to make that commitment.

Ferguson said he is not surprised he is the only candidate standing up for taxpayers. "Both Sen. Kinder's and Bekki Cook's records show that taxpayers need to hold on to our wallets when either of them are in a position to influence state government's tax policy.

"Senator Kinder has shown no desire to lower taxes on Missouri's working families and small businesses, even though he is willing to burden taxpayers with the cost of a baseball stadium for the St. Louis Cardinals, and Bekki Cook has already publicly stated that she wants to raise taxes."

Under the direction of Governor Holden and Senator Kinder, state government spending increased again for fiscal year 2005, which began July 1. Of Missouri's 23 state departments, 17 saw spending increase over the previous fiscal year. **

Ferguson continued, "This demonstrates Sen. Kinder's record of putting government ahead of people. His liberal spending is one big reason Missouri has lost thousands of jobs in the last four years."

Bekki Cook has publicly called for revival of a massive sales tax increase overwhelmingly rejected by voters in 2002. ***

"Missouri's voters have more economic sense than Ms. Cook. We said 'no' to the tax hike, which would disproportionally harm Missouri's working poor and drive retail business into neighboring states. Unfortunately, Bekki Cook is not listening to the voters' clear instructions," said Ferguson.

Ferguson's campaign coordinator, Mike Hurley, summarized voters' choice on Tuesday; "We voters want a better economy, more jobs and lower taxes in these difficult times. Mike Ferguson's economic plan recognizes Missouri's need to reduce spending and cut taxes. This is the quickest, most powerful and permanent way to improve our economy. The failed, liberal tax and spend policies of Holden, Kinder and Cook are wrong for small businesses, wrong for working families and wrong for our state.

A vote Tuesday for Mike Ferguson will send that message to Jefferson City. Until legislators and bureaucrats know we are serious about helping working families and small businesses, our economy will not improve. The very best way to send that wake-up call is to vote Mike Ferguson for Lieutenant Governor."
